New designs of the Galaxy S23 and S23+ look a lot like an iPhone

  • Samsung has now officially unveiled its new Galaxy S23 series of smartphones.
  • There are three models in the mix, with the first two featuring a new design.
  • Here Samsung specifically removed the large camera housing on the rear for something sleeker.

Samsung has now officially unveiled its new Galaxy S23 series. The South Korean company has three devices in tow for the lineup, as has been the case in recent years. You can read about the Ultra model, which is the largest and best-specced option of the bunch here, but joining it are the Galaxy S23 and S23+.

These two make up the standard, and slightly larger, options from Samsung for this new series.

While upfront things look about the same as they did with last year’s models, on the rear there have been some notable changes. The most apparent of these is the rear camera housing. On the Galaxy S22 series, the housing jutted out quite a bit, playing host to a trio of lenses, and necessitating a protective cover to ensure the device laid flat when placed down.

Now of the S23 and S23+, no housing is present, with the lenses now sitting within the rear portion of the body, and only the rings around said lenses peering out slightly. In general, it is a far sleeker design than its predecessors. One that reminds us of the more recent iPhones, although Samsung has gone for a different orientation, with the three cameras lining up vertically, instead of Apple’s triangular setup.

The frame of the new phones also look a little Apple-esque, with a bit more curve to them. They are also quite distinct from the angular design of the Ultra, which likely has not changed due to the fact that it features an S Pen recessed into its frame.

Back to the S23 and S23+, the aforementioned rear cameras are a 50MP primary option, which is paired with a 12MP and 10MP lenses. Up front a 12MP selfie camera is present.

This setup is the same across both models, with the key differences being in display size and battery capacity. Here the S23 features a 6.1″ screen and 3 900mAh unit, while the S23+ is packing a 6.6″ screen and 4 700mAh power plant. As for processors, the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset is found across the whole S23 lineup.

In terms of local availability and pricing, all three models go up for pre-order in South Africa tomorrow, and go on sale come 25th February. Recommended pricing for the S23 is R21 999, and R23 999 for the Plus flavour. As with the Ultra, four colour options are available locally – Phantom Black, Cream, Green, and Lavender.
