DBE on Matric exam leaks: ‘more work still needed to be done’

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has continued its investigation into the leaked Matric exam papers and has, today, provided a small update on the matter.

The Council of Education Ministers (CEM) has received a preliminary report for the investigation and held a meeting over its contents.

“In the last meeting of CEM Basic Education Minister Mrs Angie Motshekga indicated that the preliminary report would be received on 30 November 2020. Earlier today [1st December] CEM deliberated on the report and noted that the investigation had not yet been completed and that more work still needed to be done. The Council agreed that the credibility, integrity and fairness of the examination cannot be compromised,” reads a media statement released by the DBE.

Right now two examination papers have been confirmed to be leaked to the public before Matric students sat to write them: Mathematics Paper 2 and Physical Sciences (Chemistry) Paper 2. Since revealing these leaks to the public the DBE has threatened Matrics with rewrites, but at the time of writing, has not come to a conclusion on this and no rewrites have been officially announced.

As for when the public can expect an update on the leaks and anything to do with rewrites, more information will be shared in the coming days.

“CEM acknowledged the complex nature of the investigation. CEM also appreciated the work being done by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations, The Hawks to assist the Department in the investigation. The report will be processed internally and Minister Motshekga will host a media briefing later this week to make an announcement,” concludes the media statement.

For now South African Matrics, their parents and other support systems can only keep their heads down and continue with the exams as planned. Today students will be writing History Paper 2 and Engineering Graphics and Design Paper 1.

Barring any delays or extensions exams will continue until 15th December, and results will be released next year on 22nd January.
