Will Facebook Stop You From Getting a Job?

The results of a six-country-wide survey show that 1 in 10 young people (aged 16 to 34) have been declined a job because of their social media profile. The question, “Have you ever been rejected for a job because of comments or pictures on your online/social media profile?” was met with a surprising number of positive responses from the 6 000 participants. Two-thirds of those surveyed said that they were not concerned with future job prospects being potentially harmed by their social media activity.

Recruitment agencies in particular have started to use social media to verify credentials on CVs as well as gain an understanding of the character of the candidate they are looking to place at a particular company. MD of Mass Staffing Projects, Roxanne Dallas, was very forthcoming about how they deal with social media in the recruitment process.

“Youths often think of their social lives and their work lives as two separate entities… companies hire people – in addition to their skills, it includes personality, attitude, etc.” she explains.

“I personally have had many strong CV applications, but have declined interviews due to social media behaviour.”
