Android app lets you catch a taxi, SA style

South African startup, Sowertech, with funding from mLab Southern Africa, is developing Aftarobot (think: after robot), a mobile application to help commuters hail taxis.

The local minibus taxi transport system is very much an ad-hoc system, but Aftarobot – presumably named for where taxis are most likely to stop: after robots (or traffic lights) – takes a shot at changing that. Built to be used on Android smartphones, it lets commuters hail taxis from their current location. Those on smart devices will be able to track the taxis in real time, while drivers can broadcast how many free seats are available in their minibus taxis.

Presently, Aftarobot is operating on pilot routes under a beta trial in conjunction with ARMSTA (Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand, Sandton Taxi Association). Users interested in the application can download the APK manually on the Aftarobot website.
