Blizzard’s space MMO in trouble

VentureBeat is reporting that Blizzard’s space MMO, codenamed Project Titan, is in trouble. Big trouble. According to the site’s sources, the production team has been been shrunk from 100 to just 30 people, the release date has been put back until 2016 and there’s been a complete reset for much of the storyline and content.

Which is all pretty serious.

The story has been sort of confirmed by Blizzard, whose official spokesperson Shon Damron told VentureBeat that:

We’ve always had a highly iterative development process, and the unannounced MMO is no exception. We’ve come to a point where we need to make some large design and technology changes to the game. We’re using this opportunity to shift some of our resources to assist with other projects while the core team adapts our technology and tools to accommodate these new changes. Note that we haven’t announced any dates for the MMO.

This is not good news for Blizzard. While its other big MMO, World of Warcraft, still has over eight million players and dwarfs all competition almost a decade after its launch, that player base is dwindling. WoW has lost 1.3 million subscribers already this year.

There is, of course, StarCraft II to fall back on, but with even updates to that game now a long way off, Blizzard’s magic touch is in danger of going the way of Midas.
