YouTube slows it down a little

In a continuing effort to make desktop video editing software more pointless, YouTube’s added a new effect to its online video editing suite. Users can now slow down their footage to either 50%, 25%, or 12.5% of the original speed.

The slow-motion tool can be accessed in the video editor on YouTube, alongside the other effects on offer. Fittingly, it has a little tortoise on the button.

slowmo

It works well enough for a free tool. It even slows down sound, though usually slow-mo footage is best accompanied by excited sportscaster slow-mo-replay commentary, or dramatic music. Don’t hope for miracles, though. The tool still has to compensate for frames that physically aren’t there, so there are still some artefacts when you look closely. So don’t chuck away your copy of Premiere Pro just yet.
