Facebook launches #hashtags

There’s always that guy on Facebook, the one who uses hashtags because he thinks that they make him look cool and hip. Well as of today everyone can hashtag their Facebook posts because the big blue social machine has just announced that hashtags will now be searchable on the social network, allowing users to track and follow conversations. The move comes after Facebook struggled to add a real-time element to its knowledge graph that tracks user sentiment and allows for advertisers to target users in real time. Facebook’s Greg Lindley wrote a blog post acknowledging that they were not first with the idea of using hashtags, joining other services like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, or Pinterest.

The move is a smart one from Facebook who seems to dominate as a second screen application for TV viewers in the US, noting that it has “between 88- and 100-million Americans engaged on Facebook… every single night. The recent ‘Red Wedding’ episode of Game of Thrones, received over 1.5-million mentions on Facebook, representing a significant portion of the 5.2-million people who watched the show.”
