ANC website taken down by hackers

At 09h10 this morning the Twitter user known as @zim4thewin, who claims to represent Anonymous Africa, declared that the ANC website (http://anc.org.za/) would be their next target. Zim4thewin has successfully taken the website of the Ministry of Defence in Zimbabwe down, along with the revenue office and local paper The Herald too. Earlier this week, a DOS attack attributed to zim4thewin also took the South African Independent Online down as well.

The hacker has repeatedly said that the attacks are against supporters of Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe, who was much criticised this week for calling elections in the country on a very short time table. The Zimbabwean opposition leader and sitting prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, was among those who are calling for a longer deadline.

It took all of 60 seconds after the scheduled 10AM start of the attack for the next tweet to come in confirming the attack had succeeded and that the website was down.

While zim4thewin’s methods appear to be crude DOS attacks, their actions are resonating with users of the social networks. One Twitter follower says that cyberspace will be the next frontier of the ‘Chimurenga’,a Shona word that roughly translated means “revolutionary struggle”
