Broadband access slightly more with new Telkom prices

Telkom today announced new pricing, effective from the 1st of August 2013. The national landline operator will now charge 5.8% more for basic phone line rental, which brings the monthly fee for a copper line to R157. This is up from the R148 it costs at the moment. Business customers will now have to pay R216 a month, a 6.2% increase.

While the secondary fees for accessing DSL services remain unchanged, all broadband customers still have to pay both fees for accessing 1, 2, 4, 10, 20, and 40Mbps lines. It might only be R9, but the total cost still goes against what ICASA called for, earlier this month: lower broadband prices. The communications watchdog launched its Cost to Communicate program which it hopes will see reforms across the industry, from interconnect rates and call tariffs, to broadband access prices. At the time it used the example of Maboneng Broadband, which offers 40Mbps fibre access for R329/month.

Voice calls will also be affected. Telkom’s new tariffs bring good news to those making mobile calls, which will now be 3.1% cheaper, at R1.30/minute. But it’s bad news for for those who rely on calling land lines. Tariffs have been hiked to 46c per minute, up from 42c per minute. The minimum charge for connecting a local call has also risen; it’s now 63c, up from 57c.
