Chopping up for good: it’s Random Hacks of Kindness Day at UNISA

Ever heard of Random Hacks of Kindness? Probably not, but RHOK is one of those global tech thingy/movements/ideas you should follow. It’s a loose association of international hack spaces funded with some cash from folk like Microsoft, who all get together online twice a year to do good with their l33t technical skills. There’s a South African chapter, of course, which is meeting up this weekend (as are all the overseas ones) at UNISA’s campus in Pretoria.

What happens at these things is a group of hackers turn up along with other civic minded souls, who hopefully provide the hackers with ideas for social good. It’s a two day thing, and the best software and hardware prototypes knocked up over two days get shown off sometime just after lunch on Sunday.

There’s a list of problems looking for willing hackers to solve over here. They include the challenge of building a cashless payment system for a school campus so pupils don’t have to carry around money and a request to build an app that will give buyers a chance to vote up or down real-life stores.

Sadly, I can’t make it along – it’s been a busy week getting htxt up and running and I some other commitments, but you can follow the event’s Twitter feed for pics and news of projects under over here: RHOK Pretoria.
