Facebook dabbling with digital news

According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook is working on a way to show off news that aggregates stories from multiple sources in a new tablet and smartphone-friendly format that resembles the clean looks and touch-friendliness of Flipboard.

Referred to internally as Reader, the project has been underway for more than a year now, with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg taking a personal interest, providing direction and feedback. The project has been undertaken in an effort to make Facebook the definitive digital newspaper that people turn to instead of more traditional sources of news, according to people close to the project.

There is no word from Facebook’s official spokespeople on when the new news reader app will be launched, or why the company is embarking on this endeavour. The Wall Street Journal speculates that this move is an indication that Facebook is putting in effort to entice users to spend more time with it, and by extension and its targeted ads.

It’s an interesting idea, but we don’t yet know what it might look like. To get an idea of Facebook’s design direction in the meantime, check out the work the company is doing to make your your news feed less cluttered and nicer-looking.
