Geogr@phy lessons from Twitter

Being on the receiving end of billions of tweets every day, Twitter knows its sitting on a vast amount of information. Thankfully, it uses that for good.

Its latest undertaking uses the location data for geotagged tweets. Assuming you have it enabled, your Twitter client can attach your location to every tweet you send. Thanks to the number of geotagged tweets it’s enabled the company to build beautiful virtual maps of major cities where Twitter activity can be used to plot the outlines of major city centres, their streets, and beaches.

For more of Twitter’s maps, check out the dedicated photo gallery on its Flickr page. Though there are no maps for South Africa, the guys over at Zero Geography mapped Twitter activity for African cities earlier this year – notice how many people tweet on the highways. No wonder accident stats are so high.
