LG to start making flexible displays for smartphones

“We have completed the development of our first flexible displays. We will mass produce flexible displays from the fourth quarter of this year,” this is the official word from LG Display who are pioneering the field of flexible displays at the moment. The move comes to meet  “the rapid need for display advancements” which most probably means that LG Electronics is pressuring the move to meet its plans to debut a phone with a flexible OLED display before the end of the year. While other manufacturers, most notably Samsung, are working on products with flexible displays bent over them, LG wants to be first to market with the technology.

OLED panels offer many advantages over traditional LCD displays particularly being more energy efficient. The flexible displays could prevent screen breakages which would be particularly useful in South Africa where the cost of replacing a high end smartphone like an iPhone 5 or a Galaxy S4 screen is around R4000. Hopefully in the not too distant future this technology will lead to folding displays that can go from smartphone size to tablet size depending on your needs.
