Buy Windows apps with your Vodacom account

Nokia and Vodacom have announced that users with Lumia Windows Phone devices will be able to pay for app purchases using their Vodacom accounts.

Carrier billing isn’t new – in fact, Nokia’s had this since Symbian – but of the current smartphone platforms in South Africa, Nokia’s Windows Phone devices now have a unique advantage. Credit cards are the de facto payment solution on virtual marketplaces, but some people don’t have a card, or are simply wary of using their card online. For those, carrier billing takes away the risk or inconvenience of not having a credit card. Simply purchase apps you want and the total will be added to your bill.

With app prices hovering at between R8 and R56, it does present a new opportunity for bill shock. The next time you get a mobile phone bill that’s twice the normal amount, just review your Angry Birds habits.

Vodacom’s carrier billing for Lumia phones will work on devices running Windows Phone 7.5, 7.8, and the current generation Windows Phone 8.
