NVIDIA’s ShadowPlay to shadow your play soon

Come June 25, graphics card maker NVIDIA will launch a new service called ShadowPlay as a part of its GeForce Experience (GFE) software. Up to now, GFE has been all about suggesting optimal graphics settings for games, but as of June 25, it will optionally include ShadowPlay software that can record your gameplay, while you’re playing, at the press of a button.

ShadowPlay essentially watches what is being processed by your GeForce video card and converts it into a highly-efficient video stream using the H.264 video decoding capabilities built into the card’s Kepler architecture. ShadowPlay can be set to run in the background all the time, buffering the last 20 minutes of gameplay; it’s only when a hotkey or hotkey combination is pressed does it save the stored footage to a file.

Best of all, these recorded videos take up a fraction of the storage space used by competing gameplay-recording solutions like Fraps and have a negligible effect on system performance thanks to the efficiencies of the H.264 codec.

ShadowPlay will only work with cards based on NVIDIA’s Kepler architecture, though, so only the company’s 600- and 700-series cards will qualify. If you own one of these cards and are a keen taker of game footage but you hate FRAPS, log on to the NVIDIA website on the 25th of the month for a closer look.
