That R140m Free State site in full

Remember the R140m website commissioned for the Free State government that was exposed as a $40 WordPress template by the Sowetan? ITWeb haven’t forgotten it, and followed up the initial report by requesting a copy of the tender under the Promotion of Access to Information Act.

There’s a great write up of what they found, including provision for 12 years of work on development and R14.2m in travel costs.

During the design phase, software from the Adobe suite was set to be used, while the database, to be set up during development and creation, would be created using Microsoft SQL. Software such as ASP.NET, PHP and DHTML was set to be used during Web development, and no mention of WordPress is made at all.

Great stuff. Naturally the actual website – www.freestateonline.gov.za – has been down since the original story broke.
