This is the PlayStation 4

The highlight of Sony’s press conference at E3 2013 was its unveiling of the PlayStation 4 console – and it’s price.

At $399 (around R4 000 when directly converted) the PS4 undercuts Microsoft’s Xbox One by a crucial $100. That’s not all, though. Sony representative, Jack Tretton, went up on stage and pointed out the direct differences between his company’s console and Microsoft’s DRM-beleaguered monolith.

The PS4 is slimmer. It packs in more hardware – 25% more outright graphics power. It is cheaper. It will support used games. It won’t have any restrictive DRM. Sony gets it – this just has to be a box for games. As The Verge pointed out, all Sony had to do was show up, mention those things, drop the mic, and walk off stage.

Unfortunately, Sony was light on info about the console’s shipping date, saying only that it will land this Holiday season. We will get confirmation from Ster Kinekor, the PlayStation distributor in South Africa, about local availability and update, soon.
