Vine promises to never give you up, never let you down

Yesterday Twitter announced an Android app for Vine, its video sharing service that lets users embed 6-second clips. In the hours that followed, Will Smidlein decompiled the Android app, retooled the API, and figured out how to upload a video that’s longer than 6 seconds. And what better video than Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up?

The 16-year-old developer no doubt caused a few headaches for Vine and Twitter staff with his Rickroll, but The Verge reports that this isn’t the first time a full-length video has been posted to Twitter’s video sharing service. Previous workarounds required the use of a jailbroken iPhone and uploading video directly from the device’s camera roll.

In an interview with The Verge, Smidlein said that he apologised to the software engineers whose day he’d ruined. Originally intended as a joke for him and his friends, the post had gone viral and spread beyond his control.

Unlike Astley, Smidlein had to give it up. The video in his tweet has now been deleted, at the request of a Twitter employee.
