iTunes turns 5: Free apps from Apple

Apple’s iTunes App Store went live on the 10th of July, 2008. That’s just about 5 years ago, and with its 5th birthday coming up a gaggle of apps have had their prices drop to zero. Free. Mahala.

While promotions in the iTunes store are usually limited to region – an album on sale in the American store won’t necessarily be on sale in the South African store – this time around they’re global. A quick gander at the South African store shows the same free apps available. And they’re not shoddy ones, either.

Traktor DJ, a music creation app for iPhone and iPad is now free, and that usually costs R40 on iPhone and R160 on iPad. Another dearly-priced app is the Barefoot World Atlas – a mashup of Google Earth and Wikipedia, for reference nuts. It’s now free, compared to its usual selling price of R40. Also on the list are Over, a photography app that usually sells for R16, and Day One, a journal application that usually goes for R40.

And if you have an American iTunes account, you’ll also have access to games that are now free. Infinity Blade 2 usually costs R57, Tiny Wings (R8), and Badland (R33). Apple’s not mentioned what else we can expect, but as more deals become available we’ll add ’em to the list.
