Contact lenses that can zoom

UC San Diego and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology have been hard at work creating a set of contact lenses that can zoom in and out to aid people with degrading eyesight. The current prototype has a 2.8X zoom capability but is fitted to a pair of Samsung 3DTV glasses which enable the ‘zooming’ effect of the lenses making it far too cumbersome for daily use. The team hopes to shrink the design down and to use less rigid materials over time so that they can fit the lens to a human eye for testing, currently they’re using a replica of a human eye.

While the application for people with macular degeneration is obvious the intelligence community must be waiting with bated breath for the day when they can surveil a target using zoom lenses in their eyes and considering the fact that the program is sponsored by DARPA the military applications must be high on the agenda.
