Copper theft rises for first time this year

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry has released its monthly ‘barometer’ on copper theft this morning – which covers telecoms and electricity cables stolen – and says that the amount of copper relieved of its rival owners has risen for the first time since September 2012. According to the figures, 158 metric tons of copper was lifted in June, compared to 132 tons in May – a rise of almost one fifth.

Before we go into panic mode, however, the report says that the figure is also 38% down year-on-year, compared to June 2012, and that falling international commodity prices means that the overall reduction in theft should continue to fall.
