Fingerprint reader coming to next iPhone

The comments and development tools that reveal Apple's secret.
The comments and development tools that reveal Apple’s secret.

After months of rumours, it’s been confirmed in a code leak for iOS that the new iPhone will have an integrated fingerprint reader.

In the code, detailed by 9to5Mac, there’s specific mention of biometric development tools in iOS, as well as comments in the code that allude to tutorials which will show users how to use the fingerprint scanner.

While biometrics on mobile devices is nothing new – we’ve already had phones and laptops with fingerprint scanners – what looks to make the iPhone solution different is its implementation. In typical Apple fashion, instead of opting for a conventional solution it has implemented a scanner into the home button. The language in the leak seems to suggest that simply holding a thumb on the home button will scan for a fingerprint. Most existing solutions require a sliding motion – something that won’t work well when holding a phone in one hand.

Of course, we’ll have to wait until September to see – the best way to deal with Apple’s secretive approach.
