Garmin HUD gives your car a jet-fighter display

If you’ve ever had flights (heh) of fantasy about being a fighter pilot, but didn’t quite make the grade, then Garmin’s got good news for you.

The company’s latest product, the Garmin HUD, acts as a heads-up display for cars. Once paired with a smartphone, via Bluetooth, the company’s Garmin StreetPilot and NAVIGON navigation apps will send information to the HUD. Graphics are projected onto the windshield, well within the sight line of the driver, with a special transparent film making sure that the reflection doesn’t get lost in the aether.

Sure, there are apps that will let you use your phone as a heads-up display in your car, but a dedicated device means you don’t have to leave your shiny new smartphone on the dashboard, cooking in the sun.

Being a Garmin device, and integrating with the company’s navigational software, the HUD lets you keep your eyes on the road while driving, and at the same time receive visual cues for navigation. The usual audio prompts are still present, but you no longer have to glance at a separate display when you approach complex junctions.

Some manufacturers already have HUDs available as option on their cars (BMW, in particular, offers it on many models) but now it’s something you can have without needing to buy a whole new car.

Except Garmin won’t bring the $130 (around R1 300) device to the country. What a pity.
