Gmail now emailing adverts directly to users’ inboxes

Gmail has reinvented itself again with the introduction of Gmail tabs which segments users’ inboxes into tabbed sections for different email. Sections include Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums which according to Google allows Gmail users to take back control of their inbox by segmenting it effectively. The Social tab is for updates from social networks e.g. Twitter and Facebook; Primary is for regular correspondence; and Promotions is for marketing offers and deals.

It seems though Google has some new ideas for the Promotions tab, which includes sending promotional emails (advertising) directly to the inboxes of their users. This new version of paid-for-placement advertising emails (which is in beta at the moment and therefore only showing up in a select few users’ inbox) are in addition to the ad bar at the top of the page and the ad column on the right-hand side of opened emails.

The new promoted advertising emails are differentiated from regular emails by a shaded background and the word “Ad” with an info button appearing below the sender’s name. Google explains it as “a new type of ad which you can forward to a friend, or star to save it to your inbox. If you dismiss this ad, you won’t see it again,”. There are only two ways to stop receiving the new adverts, either by disabling the Promotions tab by clicking on the plus sign on the right of your Gmail inbox tabs, or going back to the old style inbox by deselecting all of the new tabs.

Maybe Microsoft was right:

Do you think this new style of advertising is intrusive, or are you alright with it? Let us know in the comments.
