ID cards on the way this month

The South African government has confirmed a launch date for the country’s new ID cards. The 18th of July, Mandela Day, will see the launch of the new form of identification.

ID cards were originally announced in May this year. They’ll be the future replacement for the current, analogue green barcoded ID books carried by citizens. The cards will have embedded near-field communications (NFC) chips that will allow them to be used in an as-yet unannounced ways.

It’s still unclear what the application procedure would be, though government has said it will focus on letting first-time applications get their ID cards first, as well as those who need their IDs reissued. The process to phase out the old green books is expected to take between 6 and 7 years.
