Intel Safaricom YOLO Android smartphone – Hands On

At only 11 000 Kenyan Shillings ($125 or about R1250) the YOLO has the potential to be a real land grab for Intel who have struggled to get a foothold in the ARM dominated smartphone world. On first glance the diminutive YOLO is nothing special; black plastic and some branding around an unremarkable 3.5-inch, 320×480 resolution display. But once you start using the phone you realise the potency of the package. The pure vanilla Android experience is usually reserved for the Nexus  family of devices but the YOLO comes with a fresh helping of the stock operating system unencumbered by the bloatware that so many manufacturers find the need to incorporate. Because of the light weight nature of the OS, the YOLO is very snappy and seems, to me at least, to be a great little device for a first time smartphone buyer who is price sensitive.

We’ll be getting more in depth into the YOLO smartphone in a full review soon, so keep your eyes peeled for it.

PS: YOLO  is not an acronym for the popular saying ‘You Only Live Once’ but rather, it is an evolutionary step from Intel’s first phone, the Xolo.
