JK Rowling’s crime novel was predicted by a game show champion

Big news from the UK, today, is the rise in popularity for a novel called “The Cuckoo’s Calling”. The crime novel was written by Robert Galbraith – better known as JK Rowling, the author of the famous Harry Potter books.

It came as a surprise to many, including editors who turned down Galbraith’s novel, but not to all-time Jeopardy record-holder, Ken Jennings.

Jennings, who’s also penned a few books, has accrued a bit of fame after his jaunt on US game shows. While he’s a regular funny-man on Twitter, the 74-show streak record-holder also – as one does – keeps his own blog. And it’s there, in 2007, where he wrote his thoughts on JK Rowling’s predilection for murder mystery stories. Drawing parallels between Rowling’s Harry Potter series and the Scooby Doo mysteries, he wrote (referencing the unveiling of villains in the Potter books), “Some of these reveals even involve the Hogwarts equivalent of a Scooby-Doo rubber mask coming off the crotchety caretaker: Quirrell’s turban, Pettigrew’s Animagus disguise, Barty Crouch, Jr.’s Polyjuice Potion.”

But the clincher, proving our headline, is his closing paragraph.

“I bet Rowling’s first post-Harry Potter book–talk about a hard act to follow–will be a classic mystery of some kind. I don’t know if it’ll be a hard-boiled gumshoe case, a true-crime police procedural, a classic manor-house throwback, or what, but it’ll be a mystery novel. She’s been writing them all along, after all. It’s just that no one’s noticed.”
