Matthew Mole tops local iTunes charts

Local recording artist and Cape Town native, Matthew Mole, has debuted at number one on the South African iTunes charts with his latest album. The achievement makes him the first South African artist to top the charts – albeit only on the local store.

The 21-year-old, who also has two EPs available for download, beat out established hit albums with his latest release, The Home We Built. Below him on the chart are Now That’s What I Call Music 64, Night Visions by Imagine Dragons, and Magna Carta Holy Grail by Jay Z.

However, Mole’s album does not show up on the charts in the American iTunes store, where there’s significantly more traffic. This, despite Times Live reporting that he has been attracting attention in other markets. In the UK his album has already been chosen as Record of the Day, as well as being named A&R Worldwide’s artist of the week, in the US.

Sadly, Apple doesn’t publish the criteria for how albums are ranked in the iTunes store – it’s likely an algorithm based on total downloads over a specific time period. Other than having per-region charts, there’s no way to tell how much more popular Mole’s release is compared to other albums.
