New version of Vine helps you make better videos

After Instagram released its video functionality – with clips that can be up to 15 seconds long – Vine has lost some of its appeal. Not deterred by the threat of longer videos and artsy filters, Twitter has upgraded the apps for its video service.

Two welcome additions include ghosting and autofocus point select. The latter, when activated, lets users select an autofocus point before recording. This eliminates the little lens shuffle during recordings as Vine tries to autofocus. Ghosting will be of great use to stop-motion artists: it draws a ghost of your last recorded frame, letting you line up shots and make sure jump cuts don’t detract from the aesthetic of your art.

Other additions include a rule-of-thirds grid, because framing matters, as well as a the ability to reblog revine videos in your stream, for your followers to enjoy. It’s also possible to create a private account for your videos, should you want them to remain accessible only to a select few.

The new apps are available on the iOS and Android marketplaces as of today.
