NSA’s PRISM is scaring companies off of their clouds

Well here’s confirmation of something we all suspected would happen: InfoWorld is reporting that companies are taking their business away from US cloud operators at a staggering rate in the wake of NSA snooping. According to a survey conducted by the Cloud Security Alliance, one in 10 customers from outside the US has cancelled a hosting contract with companies inside the US because of fears that their data is being handed over to the government. Even more telling is that 56% of those asked said they were now less likely to use a US company in the future.

That’s a lot of people looking to repatriate their data, or just not send it off overseas in the first place. The thing is, however, while the NSA’s PRISM program (of which exact details are still shrouded in secrecy) is now arguably the best documented of the government snooping exercises, it’s far from the only one. France, Germany and the UK are all believed to operate similar programs.

A third of US companies included in the surveys also said that it was harder to trade overseas as a direct result of the Snowden revelations, with 41% calling for immediate repeal of the Patriot Act (under which PRISM was established).
