Secure your Instagram password

After a number of Instagram accounts were hacked over the weekend, we thought we’d give you a few tips on securing your Instagram account against easy hacks.

The easiest and quickest way to secure your account against exploits by these fruit-obsessed Instagram hackers is to simply reset your Instagram password. Affected accounts have already had their passwords reset by Facebook, but to ensure your account is not a future victim, you’re encouraged to reset your password anyway using a combination of characters and symbols. While 8 characters is a fairly standard minimum length for passwords, we highly recommend using more, like 12 characters as your personal minimum.

You know you keep getting encouraged to set passwords that are both long and full of funny characters? That’s because doing so makes it difficult for a hacker to use sophisticated software tools to guess what it is, a process referred to as “cracking” by the security community. The cracking process takes time based on the complexity of the password being cracked, so by making your password long and using symbols, letters and numbers, you’re increasing the time it will take those tools to get at your password, making you an unappealing target.

You should also try to avoid using the names of pets, loved ones or anniversary dates, as using them leads to the possibility of being “socially engineered”. “Social engineering” is the act of manipulating someone into giving out information that can be used to guess passwords. By using a combination of symbols, letters and numbers, you’re reducing the chance of having passwords successfully guessed based on your personal information.

Other standard practices for keeping your information safe include always signing out of Instagram if you’ve accessed it from a computer that isn’t yours, periodically changing your password just in case, and never telling anyone what your password is, even if you trust them.
