Shuttr: a Bluetooth remote for your camera phone

Using smartphones as cameras is becoming more commonplace. People are happy carrying around one device and using that for all their connectivity needs as well as letting it double up for photo duties. But one thing even the most recent phones lack, for all their eye-movement detection, is a smart shutter system.

Set your phone up on a tripod to take a family photo, stage an elaborate selfie next to a skyscraper, or just some time-lapse snaps, and you’re reliant on hodge-podge hacks that aren’t always reliable. Muku Labs, based in Hong Kong, thinks it has the answer: a hardware solution caled the Shuttr.

This Bluetooth remote will sync to your phone and act as a wireless shutter. With full control over when the photo gets taken, instead of relying on voice commands, smile detection, or timers, chances are the end result will be far more satisfactory. The Kickstarter project only needed $10 000 to get off the ground, but so far it’s received more than double that in support – as of publication it’s at $23 299.

With the early backer options all spoken for, the cheapest contribution ($29, around R300, excluding shipping) will net you a Shuttr remote as well as a suction stand to prop up your smartphone. Compatible devices are listed as: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Note Tablets (8 and 10-inch), and the Google/LG Nexus 4.
