Ubuntu Phone gets name, may be coming to SA

Everyone’s favourite open sourcerer, Mark Shuttleworth’s Canonical, may well have just revealed the name of the first mobile phone handset due to arrive running its Ubuntu Touch operating system, in a trademark application unearthed by Phandroid. According to the filing, Canonical now owns the name Ubuntu Edge, which is a pretty fine name for a phone we reckon.

If true, then Edge will arrive running the Ubuntu Touch operating system, an Android-based spin on its desktop OS which is shaping up well. It’s widely believed that these first official Ubuntu phones will go on sale somewhere in the world in late October.

If you fancy trying Ubuntu Touch out before that, however, there are now images available to flash to over 40 devices listed here, including the Kindle Fire HD and Samsung Galaxy S3. We’re planning to try out one of the latest builds later this week, because apparently it’s come a long way since the initial release.

There’s even more good news for South Africans this morning, too. Apparently MTN has joined the Carrier Advisory Group for Ubuntu Phone, which will give it the rights to be one of the first operators in the world to carry Ubuntu handsets when they launch.

UPDATE

MTN gets in touch with us to add an official word about its involvement:

“MTN can confirm that it has recently joined Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group. It is premature to comment on whether MTN plans to use Ubuntu’s devices.”

So there.
