Unlock your front door with an app

An American company called Kwikset has developed a new kind of door lock that doesn’t need to be unlocked using a physical key. It’s called the Kevo, and it’s an electronic deadbolt that unlocks at your touch as long as you have your iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 smartphone with you and the Kevo app loaded. It goes on preorder in the US from tomorrow for $219.

The company’s reps demonstrated the Kevo to Engadget at a recent trade show (see the video below). It apparently uses Bluetooth v4 (the extremely low-power version) to detect the presence of your smartphone, and simply opens when touched – no keys required. It uses four AA batteries, and according to the company’s rep those batteries should last around a year going on an average of six unlocks per day.

It looks like a pretty neat solution to the problem so many of us have faced of juggling parcels with keys when approaching our front doors. Let’s hope it makes its way to South Africa at some point, and that Kwikset finishes developing the Android and BlackBerry versions of their app in the near future.

Check out the company’s website for a more detailed breakdown of what the Kevo has to offer.
