WhatsApp is bringing the iOS application in line with the rest of its portfolio of apps by charging a $0.99 a year subscription fee. The fee has already been in place on the BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Android phones since inception but iPhone users have only ever had to pay a once off $0.99 to purchase the app and no recurring charge. The good news for all current iPhone users is that WhatsApp will be free of charge for the rest of your life but new users will have to pay the recurring fee.

Along with the update to the pricing, iOS users can now also backup their chat history to iCloud by going to – WhatsApp Settings > Chat Settings > Chat Backup.
