Xbox Music gets web player while local launch remains a mystery

Microsoft today made available the web-based player for Xbox Music, its music streaming service that started life on the Xbox console.

Those who have an Xbox Music subscription will be able to log in at music.xbox.com and access the same content, including saved playlists, as they have on their console, Windows 8 PC, and Windows Phone devices.

The web player brings Xbox music to machines that don’t run Windows 8, which is the only operating system to get a native Xbox Music app. There’s also speculation that Microsoft might bring iOS and Android apps to the fore.

All of which is moot, here in sunny South Africa. Though it was mentioned last year that Microsoft will launch Xbox Music in SA, we’ve not seen anything surface since then. In the meantime Deezer, Simfy, Rara, and Nokia Music are gaining traction – there’s clearly a market for people who want to pay a monthly subscription for unlimited music. A service that will offer seamless functionality with the Xbox ecosystem would be even more appreciated.

A Microsoft SA spokesperson said that there’s no official information to offer at this time, with regards to the availability of Xbox Music in South Africa.
