Yunus Carrim: Getting to know your new minister of communications

Minister Yunus Carrim, our new minister of communications, has been a minister since 2009. Between then and now, he’s held the position of Deputy Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs. Before then, he was a member of parliament since the 1994 elections.

While in parliament he held chairperson positions at the justice and constitutional development portfolio committee, the public enterprises portfolio committee, provincial and local government portfolio committee, and membership of legislatures adhoc committee.

Before that he held various positions in government, and one in academia – a senior lecturer at the University of KwaZulu Natal.

Carrim studied at the University of Warwick, in the UK, for a honours and masters in sociology. He also holds and international diploma in journalism, from the Darlington College of Technology.

Sadly, none of his previous experience includes any work in the technology sector. Indeed, Arthur Goldstuck from World Wide Worx tweeted, following Carrim’s appointment, “Yunus Carrim replaces Dina Pule as Minister of Communications. No ICT track record, so needs strong, clued-up team.”
