Map Monday: Social network popularity by country

Did you know that Facebook isn’t huge in Russia? Or that we’re down to six major social networks, compared to June 2009?

Well, the brains behind Italian blog, Vincos.it, have done the research and kept track of the necessary data. Not only do they have a recent map of social network marketshare, by country, but also an animated GIF showing how things have changed over the last four years. Remember Orkut? Ever heard of Odnoklassniki, Zing, or Mixi? They’re all there – along with a few other surprises.

The saddest discovery, though, is penetration across Africa. While Facebook does rule most of the world, there are many social networks to use, and the grey blocks in the Dark Continent (in the above map) are a stark reminder of how far things still have to go. Or there’s simply no significant data to collect.
