Elon Musk shows off his 3D gesture rocket-building tech

Proving that we are indeed living in the future, Elon Musk yesterday released a video he teased last week in which he demonstrates the 3D projected- and gesture-based visual interface developed by his space exploration company, SpaceX.

In the video, Musk demonstrates how the system they’ve developed uses off-the-shelf components. Spatial gesture recognition is performed using a Leap Motion controller. 3D projection is done using glass sheets and a projector. SpaceX even obtained an Oculus Rift VR headset to add an extra dimension to the interaction.

The entire system was built so that engineers could manipulate 3D models in real time, interacting with and exploring them in ways that a regular keyboard and mouse just can’t. While most of the components used can be bought commercially, the SpaceX team did write custom code to let everything interface together.

Models built using the system are also compatible with 3D printers. In this case, SpaceX has a laser metal sintering printer that it can use to 3D print metal parts for its rockets. The future is here, and it looks damn fine.
