SA’s first major solar power plant goes online

Norwegian firm Scatec Solar says that its Kalkbult solar power plant in the Northern Cape was connected to South Africa’s national grid on Friday, making it South Africa’s first project developed under theRenewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) to be switched on.

The power station was switched on three months ahead of schedule, and will deliver 135kWh 135 000 000kWh a year from its 25MW array. The plant consists of over 312 000 photovoltaic panels, and employs 600 people. Around 500 of those have been trained by the company itself. Scatec says that te plant produces enough energy for 33 000 households.

Eskom has signed up to a 20-year deal to buy electricity generated by the plant, which is understood to have cost 200 million Euros (R2 640m) to build.

The company plans to build two more plants in the Northern and Eastern Cape areas.
