Black Girls Code Johannesburg looking for volunteers

The Johannesburg chapter of Black Girls Code – an international movement that aims to get more women of colour into IT from a young age – is holding its third event at Thoughtworks offices in Braamfontein on Saturday. It’s a really, really great day – I went to the last one and wrote about it here – which is potentially life changing for all involved.

Anyone can come along and get involved in the workshops, but at its heart the idea is that several groups of school kids are bussed in from disadvantaged areas like Kliptown and given the chance to play around with computers and basic programming for the day. It’s a lot of fun, and is designed to show the girls involved that there are careers open to them that they may never have thought about before.

Organiser Nyaradzai Samushonga is still looking for adult volunteers who can help out on the day – you don’t have to be able to code, but what she’s really looking for is more black women with whom the girls will be able to identify to come and help mentor in any way they can.

Signups are through Facebook here.

//UPDATE: Satuirday’s event will now be at the School of Engineering on the Wits campus, kicking off at 8am.
