15 July 2014, that’s the date when you will be able to get your hands on the new gTLDs from your local registrar. That’s according to Neil Dundas the CEO of the  ZA Central Registry (ZACR) who was speaking at the Internet Service Providers’ Association’s iWeek conference in Johannesburg yesterday. While the public will only be able to register for the new gTLDs from mid next year there is a ‘sunrise phase’ that allows for businesses, other trademark holders and governments to apply for early registration and protection of domains covering geographic names, religious and cultural names as well as public interest names.

The new .africa, .joburg, .capetown and .durban gTLDs will be available from most of the 281 South African domain registrars as the ZACR will be setting up a proxy registrar to provision domains to the registrars who don’t qualify as an Icann (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) accredited registrar.
