New lighter, thinner PlayStation Vita announced

In August of this year, Sony announced a price cut for the PlayStation Vita, the entertainment behemoth’s latest handheld games console – it went from being a $299/$249 device to a $199 device.

A few hours ago at a press conference at the Tokyo Game Show, The Verge reported that Sony announced a new PlayStation Vita model. It will retail for the same $199 price when it launches in October, and will feature an LCD screen (not OLED like its predecessor), a thinner and lighter build and a battery life that, Sony says, will give gamers an extra hour of game time over the original Vita, meaning it should last up to six hours. It will also be available in six colours: black, white, blue, yellow, pink, and olive green.

Sony indicated the new Vita’s release date as being October 10 in Japan, but no international release date was shared.

While this is good news for fans of Sony’s handheld, we do know that LCD screen technology tends to show off slightly less vibrant colours when compared to OLED, making this new Vita’s screen potentially not as nice to look at as the current one’s. Its slimmer, lighter build and excellent price could potentially make up for that, however; we will be sure to let you know when we get one in for review, once we’ve established a South African release date via local channels.
