Samsung in trouble over storage space claims

Here’s a piece of good news – MyBroadband is reporting that the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled against Samsung in a claim that its promotion of the Galaxy XCover 2 was misleading.

According to the report, a consumer complained to ASA after finding just 500MB of drive space free on his phone despite the fact it has 4GB of storage space inside. Samsung’s spin on the base Android operating system along with Vodacom’s pre-installed apps apparently swallowed up three quarters of the available space – a problem we’ve also seen with Windows 8 tablets on SSD drives lately.

This is going to be a big issue in the future. There’s enormous pressure on manufacturers to get cheap smartphones into the hands of all and sundry, and storage is an easy place to cut costs. The trouble is, poor processors and small hard drives render flashy operating systems next to useless.

It’s only a mild slap on the wrist for the South Korean firm, mind. It’s been ordered to withdraw adverts for the Galaxy XCover X2, but that’s all.
