Xbox Music is live, just not for South Africans

In an official press release sent out on Sunday, Microsoft announced plans to make its subscription-based music streaming service, called Xbox Music, available to iOS and Android devices by way of soon-to-be-released apps. The company also announced a completely free version of Xbox Music, available immediately, that streams music through web browsers.

Unfortunately, as free as it might be, when I tried to access the service using a South African Microsoft account, all I got was the image you see above. Should you own a Microsoft account with the region set to, oh, just about anywhere else, you’re golden – Xbox Music via the web will work for you. You’ll be able to take full advantage of the huge library of artists and albums and stream your favourite tunes to your computer to your heart’s content.

Ironically, local musos like Kurt Darren, Brenda Fassie, Steve Hofmeyr, the Soweto Gospel Choir and even Bles Bridges appear on the Xbox Music service, making the lack of access for South Africans not willing to bend the rules a rather bitter disappointment. There are local alternatives, of course, like Simfy, but it would still be nice to have a choice.

I contacted one of our local Xbox representatives to ask what the deal is and when it’s likely to change. Unfortunately I didn’t get an answer in time, but when I get one I will be sure to update the article with the response.
