Telkom has plans for 100Mbps fibre

The guys over at MyBroadband report that Telkom – yes, that Telkom – has shared some of its plans for a commercial fibre product that could have speeds of up to 100Mbps.

Telkom exec Steve Lewis revealed that company is currently trialling the fibre product in suburbs, business parks, and gated communities. The trials are being conducted in Durban, Kwazulu Natal, as well as Gauteng. Previously, Telkom had a technical trial for 100Mbps fibre in areas where its MSAN (Multi Service Access Node) exchanges were being rolled out, though it didn’t mention at that time whether the trials were for a future product.

This time, though, it aims to have a fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) product available by the end of next year.

A 100Mbps product would make a big leap from the current 20 and 40Mbps speeds offered by its VDSL solution, as well as the 2, 4, and 10Mbps speeds for ADSL subscribers. The move to fibre also means that it’ll be easier to roll out higher speeds to areas that have crumbling copper infrastructure. If you’re concerned that Telkom is rolling out 100Mbps fibre when your 2Mbps line isn’t stable, don’t worry; the newer technology makes it easier to offer faster speeds more reliably.

There will be plenty use for a 100Mbps line, too. This past week the company launched zero-rated uncapped products for gaming and video services. This means that you could feasibly have a 100Mbps line with a reasonable data cap for browsing and downloads, while downloads on movie and gaming services won’t count towards that cap.
