Build your own little robots with this DIY electronics kit

Ever feel like building a cute robot of your very own, but not quite in the mood to get a degree in rocket science? Yup, so do we. And thanks to the advances of modern science there’s now a low barrier to entry for all those aspiring, degree-less robot builders.

A company called littlebits has assembled the electronic equivalent of LEGO or Meccano: kits that let you assemble electronic components to make your own creations. Each littlebits “block” performs a function, whether it’s a power source, a sensor, a light, or a motor. Separate blocks are snapped together, just like LEGO, but the result is an electrical circuit that forms the basis of a number of creations.

Examples on the littlebits site include a toy car, shoes that light up, and fairground rides.

At $199 (around R2 000) for the deluxe kit (which contains 18 modules) it might sound like an expensive buy-in, but that’s about the same amount you’d pay for a complex LEGO set – shipping to South Africa is another $22 (around R220) And a little less than a LEGO Mindstorms set costs. But the littlebits sets will definitely impart far more electronics knowledge, in the long run.
