Get ready to rumble with WWE2K14

WWE2K14 celebrates the last 30 years of Wrestlemania, the World Wrestling Entertainment franchise’s iconic annual wrestling championship, by letting gamers re-play iconic matches from each year’s tournament complete with in-depth looks at the events that led up to each titanic clash. The wrestler roster is absolutely mammoth as a result, and gamers can enter the ring with a huge number of old-time and new wrestlers, from Hulk Hogan to Bret “The Hitman” Hart to Randy Savage to The Rock and many more, each complete with their own signature moves.

The objective of the 30 Years of Wrestlemania mode – only one of several play modes – is to complete the iconic wrestling moves seen in the actual event from each year, which then unlocks the next year’s event for players to compete in. That’s a lot of wrestling to do, right off the bat, and fans of the franchise should get quite a kick out of it, especially if they remember watching the matches when they happened back in the day.

If you’re old enough to remember Hunter Hearst Helmsley before be became Triple H, the WWF before it was the WWE and Ric Flair while he was still young, you’re probably the game’s target audience. I can remember growing up watching Andre the Giant’s gargantuan frame taking on (and beating) all comers, marvelling at the frenetic energy and incredible acrobatics The Ultimate Warrior brought to each bout and, more recently, wondering how old The Undertaker is, exactly, because he’s been grabbing people’s throats and throwing them to the canvas for so long that I’m almost inclined to believe he truly is immortal.

The game is out today on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, so if your idea of a good weekend doesn’t involve Battlefield 4 or Assassin’s Creed IV, WWE2K14 offers a fun alternative that you and your mates can play, if not for the nostalgia then for the ability to Piledrive, Powerbomb and suplex your opponents into oblivion.
