RIP.mp3: Winamp player due to be closed down for good

Winamp, the MP3 player software of choice for millions digital media fans, is dead. After 15 years in active development parent company AOL has pulled the plug on Justin Frankel’s pioneering software. Napster might have brought us all MP3s, but Winamp brought them to life.

Last night AOL, which bought Nullsoft, the original developer of Winamp, announced that it would shut down Winamp.com on the 20th of December. While that might sound like a death sentence, it’s not the end for the software. As moderators and developers on the Winamp forums point out, the software will continue to function after December 20th, along with all the plugins and skins for the software.

One developer even added that it would be possible to continue development, to some degree, even without access to the original source code.

But certain things will be lost when AOL flips the switch. The Winamp forums, a community with more than 500 000 members, is part of Winamp.com, and that’s what AOL says it will shut down. Other online services associated with Winamp, including Nullsoft TV and Shoutcast, will also be affected.

Those visiting Winamp.com to download the software will be given the notice, but can continue grabbing the installer until the day of the shut down. If you feel like grabbing a bit of history, you only have a month left to do so.
