Top 5s of 2013: The best convertibles

2013 saw Windows 8 tablets come into their own, with just about every manufacturer climbing on the bandwagon to bring out a Windows 8 tablet/PC. Here are five that caught our attention in 2013.

Dell Venue 8 Pro

The Venue 8 Pro is Dell’s latest Windows 8.1 convertible that’s powered by Intel’s high-performance, energy-efficient Bay Trail hardware.

On top of Intel’s hardware you’ll find an eight-inch screen that isn’t quite Full HD, but you’ll be hard-pressed to notice that at a glance. It’s a gorgeous IPS panel so colours are nice and bright, and the surrounding bezel feels nice to touch, plus it’s very thin, measuring just 9mm.

Kit the Venue 8 Pro out with its optional keyboard, and you have a convertible PC that will give any Android tablet you care to name a run for its money in both performance and value terms.

Toshiba Satellite W30T Convertible

The W30t is fantastic for both casual and professional use. It’s a Windows 8.1 convertible that’s powered by Intel’s new Haswell processors, combining sleek design with the familiar interface of Windows 8.1 and a high-resolution IPS touchscreen. It works as both a dedicated 13.3-inch notebook PC as well as a Windows 8.1 tablet when it’s not docked with the keyboard.

Need more battery? No problem, extra battery power is yours when docked. Want a wireless display? Thanks to Intel’s built-in WiDi wireless display technology, it’s yours for the using. Need more storage? Expand it with a microSD card. No matter your mobile need, the W30t has it covered.

Asus Transformer Book T100

The T100 is also built on Intel’s Bay Trail architecture that marries the company’s fastest Atom processors with brand-new graphics processing technologies.

As a result the T100 is deceptively fast, and is even capable of playing 3D games like Torchlight II at a smooth frame rate. It’s also a full Windows 8.1 machine, and can run all desktop applications without missing a beat while also operating as a Windows 8.1 tablet when it isn’t docked.

Despite its low price, this convertible is easily capable of replacing an older notebook during overseas travel without compromising on performance, making it an indispensable travel companion and work tool.

Samsung ATIV Tab 5

Combine the ease of use of Samsung’s S Pen with a Windows 8.1 tablet and notebook PC and you have an inkling of just how powerful and useful Samsung’s ATIV Tab 5 can be.

The ATIV Tab 5 will help you cruise through your workload with its 11.6-inch screen and Clover Trail Atom processor, and you can synchronise the contacts and data on your Samsung phone with the Tab 5 using Samsung’s clever SideSync technology.

Asus Taichi 31 Convertible Ultrabook

What do you get when you combine the speed and sleekness of an Ultrabook computer with the ease of use and convenience of a tablet? You get the Asus Taichi 31, a 13.3-inch convertible computer that gracefully folds from Ultrabook to Windows 8 tablet to suit your usage needs.

That’s due to a unique hinge that allows the lid to be folded completely back and the presence of two screens, a touchscreen for use when it’s folded into its tablet configuration, and another non-touch display for regular notebook use. Both screens are Full HD IPS panels, too.

Its gorgeous looks and versatility are further backed up by a range of hardware options that include ordering spent.

And the winner is…

The Transformer Book T100 from Asus is an amazing machine. It’s fast, it looks amazing and its build quality is superb, plus it’s priced quite nicely. Definitely enough for us to award it the winner in this hotly-contested category.
